The Export Market Development Grants program is currently closed to new applications. Austrade states that Round 4 is closed and that no grant rounds are presently open. Timing for a future round will be published when confirmed.
That means businesses should not rely on an old article, consultant list or previous-round date as evidence that applications are open.
What EMDG is designed to support
EMDG supports eligible Australian small and medium enterprises and representative bodies undertaking export marketing, promotional or export-training activities. The program has different tiers reflecting an applicant's export journey and changed for Round 4.
Previous funding structures and evidence expectations are useful background, but they are not a substitute for the guidelines of a future round.
Use the closed period productively
Exporters can prepare without pretending that a future grant is guaranteed. A useful readiness file may include:
- entity, ABN and ownership information
- evidence that the goods, services or intellectual property are eligible Australian products
- export history and current markets
- target-market selection and evidence
- export marketing strategy
- proposed promotional activities
- supplier quotes and internal cost assumptions
- contracts, invoices and payment records for past activity
- financial capacity and matched-funding plan
- governance and authority to apply
Keep records by activity, market, supplier, date and purpose. If the next round changes eligible expenditure or timing rules, a structured evidence file is easier to adapt than a folder of unlabelled receipts.
Separate the export plan from the grant
A credible export strategy should explain the customer, market-entry method, pricing, distribution, regulatory requirements, intellectual-property risks and milestones. The grant may support eligible promotional work, but it does not replace product-market fit or export capability.
Businesses should also avoid spending solely because they expect a future grant. Retrospective expenditure, project periods and eligible activity rules may change between rounds.
Monitor the administering body
Austrade is the primary source for EMDG round status, program changes and future announcements. The business.gov.au listing is also useful for a current high-level status check. Subscribe to official updates rather than relying on search results that may still display an old opening date.
A safe decision rule
Until Austrade announces a new round and publishes its rules, treat EMDG as closed. Prepare the export case and evidence, but do not describe the business as eligible, promise a grant amount or commit expenditure on the assumption it will be reimbursed.
When a future round opens, re-check applicant eligibility, tier, grant amount, matched-funding requirements, eligible activities, project dates and lodgement deadline from the new official documents.
